South City Choice Neighborhoods Initiative

The South City CNI project was awarded a $30 million grant through HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative to implement the shared vision to build a community that is vibrant and sustainable. As a comprehensive community development project, the South City CNI is focused on three areas: housing, people, and neighborhoods. ComCap works as a partner in the implementation of the housing and neighborhood initiatives.

The housing initiative is led by McCormack Baron Salazar with ComCap serving as local development partner. The cornerstone project is the redevelopment of Foote Homes–the last of the city’s large public housing complexes—into Foote Park at South City. The project consists of developing 712 units of new mixed-income rental housing to replace 420 units of distressed public housing, creating a community of high-quality, safe, energy-efficient rental units.

The neighborhood initiative, led by the City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development, aims to drive investment and provide opportunities and amenities to neighborhood residents and businesses. ComCap is working with the City of Memphis to lead the implementation of various neighborhood projects including a new early childhood education center, the South City Family Resource Center, park improvements, and other community programs.
